✨ A ready-to-use detective-style activity that transforms Period 3 oxide trends from something students memorise into something they can investigate, observe and explain. Put your students in the role of Chemistry Detectives! 🔎 In this 7-page classroom activity, students are given six unlabelled Period 3 oxide samples (A–F) and must use experimental evidence to uncover their identities. Students investigate each oxide by testing its behaviour with water, acid and alkali, recording their observations and using the evidence to identify each unknown. But the investigation goes beyond simply matching observations. Students must justify every identification by connecting their experimental evidence to the bonding, structure and acid–base character of Period 3 oxides. Syllabus Coverage — Cambridge 9701 ✔ 10.2(a) — Structures of the oxides of Period 3 elements ✔ 10.2(b) — Reactions of Period 3 oxides with water ✔ 10.2(c) — Acid–base behaviour of Period 3 oxides and hydroxides, including the amphoteric behaviour of Al₂O₃ ✔ 10.2(d) — Trends across Period 3 explained in terms of bonding and structure
